Frozen and fresh embryo transfers alike start with ovulation induction and tracking. While the uterus is prepared, the woman will go through an egg retrieval in which the embryologist will fertilize her eggs together with her associate's or donor's sperm.

As soon as the eggs and sperm have been retrieved and fertilized, a fresh embryo transfer will be performed immediately within 3 to 5 days whereas in the case of frozen embryo transfer (FET) the process can take place years after a woman's egg retrieval and fertilization with sperm.
