How is ICSI different from Conventional IVF treatment?

ICSI  and Conventional IVF both are forms of assisted reproductive treatment (ART) in which eggs are fertilized with sperm outside the body. Still both the procedures have some fundamental differences along with some similarities between them that one needs to be aware of.

The Conventional In-vitro fertilization (IVF) procedure includes fertilization of extracted eggs by placing them with prepared sperm in laboratory where the sperm penetrates the eggs whereas this natural stage of sperm penetrating the egg is skipped in ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection) as the procedure includes directly injecting the best single sperm inside the egg using a micro injection called micropipette.

ICSI can be called a more advanced technology developed with male factor infertility in mind, allowing men with low sperm count (oligozoospermia) or immotile sperm (asthenozoospermia) to father a toddler.  In Conventional IVF, many sperm are placed along with an egg in hopes that one in all the sperm will penetrate and fertilize the egg on its own. But the sperm with poor mobility and other disorders might be unable to do so on it's  own, that’s where ICSI comes in.

ICSI can be a better option for assisted reproduction in the following cases:

Poor sperm quality

Poor mobility of sperm

Frozen Sperm
